I remember in my first year at work back in 2002, the company conducted a fairly extensive restructuring exercise and reduced headcount by almost 15%. I remember my HR head sharing with us personally that in his experience when this happens, those impacted eventually end up benefiting and directly/indirectly it is a positive outcomes out for them.
I found it very strange, how can someone benefit from being let go. How does this benefit them by losing a stable, sometimes well paying job abruptly.
Over the next two decades, I experienced and observed almost every year some sort of re-structuring, org design impact where people lost jobs and guess what, in most cases it does work out better for them.
Many went on to get better jobs, many went on to do things they wanted to but never had the time or chance, many shifted their line of work and it made them happy, and many just took a breather.
One door closes and another one opens. We are sometimes too short sighted to understand the larger plan at play.
I hope people find and get to do things they want to do. Work for a cause, a purpose and meaning and not a company.
